The Healing House

Fans and collectors of Stephen Huneck now have a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a most exclusive piece of his artwork. Up for sale—on Dog Mountain in Saint Johnsbury, VT—is the home Stephen Huneck designed and affectionately named “The Healing House”. This is a real estate property unlike any other you will ever find.

More than just an ordinary dwelling, the Healing House offers a way of being, feeling and relating to the world and nature’s beauty. Stephen Huneck designed every detail of this home and its property, from the wonderful grounds of the exterior to the decorative and uplifting interior.  No detail was overlooked to insure an uplifting, inspiringly positive living experience.

The Exterior

Approaching the home, one immediately knows this house is special.  Black Labrador dog sculptures greet the visitor at the driveway, leading them into the substantial property featuring over two acres of Vermont land.  A fieldstone walkway leads to the entry, with its expansive wrap-around porch. The soothing sounds of a waterfall provide comfort, emptying into a small pond with a sandy beach.  Wildflowers abound, bordering a private path leading to Dog Mountain’s miles of hiking trails.

Substantial decking adorns the entire exterior of the home, offering a perfect spot to relax by the hot water spa.  A large shed provides storage for all home and garden supplies.  Elegant columns, antique windows, and brilliant stonework blend harmoniously with energy-efficient construction to create a property with timeless appeal.

The Interior

Entering through the front door, the visitor immediately notices the open floor plan, with its airy atmosphere enhanced by vaulted ceilings and multi-pane windows. This generous space provides the perfect area for entertaining. Natural cherry floors provide warmth and a sense of pristine cleanliness to the room.

Glance across to the gourmet kitchen, with its glow of solid cherry cabinets, enhanced by Huneck’s carved floral panels and knobs.  Countertops of intertwined maple and walnut provide a natural contrast to the modern stainless steel appliances.  An island workspace allows the chefs to chat with guests while they work.  Ever mindful of the family dog, Huneck has installed an airtight dog door to allow pets access to the backyard.

Touches of Stephen Huneck’s artwork are scattered throughout the home, and its obvious that an artist’s eye for design and proportion are at work.  The sitting room’s magnificent floor to ceiling stone fireplace provides a wonderful hearth and grounding feature to the space.  Turning to the bathroom, a comfortable Jacuzzi tub enclosed by a stone-accented shower surround looks across to valuable stained glass windows that bathe the room in a light filled with colorful warmth.   With typical Huneck whimsy and humor, a beautiful bronze dog sculpture is repurposed into a faucet, with the dog's mouth happily spouting water when its tail is lifted.

The two bedrooms are spacious and inviting, all keeping the same cherry wood flooring featured throughout the home.  Built-in dressers — lined with cedar and fronted with tiger maple and walnut — complement large closets with doors also constructed of figured maple and walnut.

The Healing House is a magical, unique home with a light and warm spirit. It offers year-round comfort, either as a primary residence or a vacation getaway.  This piece of residential artwork combines the very best of Vermont craftsmanship with an artistic touch that couldn't be found anywhere else in the world but on Dog Mountain.

While the Healing House is being offered unfurnished, arrangements can be made to purchase furniture and artwork separately.
